Earthing and Electromagnetic Sensitivity
Can Earthing help people with electromagnetic sensitivity, also know as electromagnetic hypersensitivity?
To answer this question, it is important to look at the evidence to date about the existence of this condition; The condition, specifically being some kind of real sensitivity to electromagnetic field exposure (EMF exposure).
The official position taken on this issue, by the World Health Organization, is the symptoms of Electromagnetic Hypersensitivity are real, but the evidence that exists up to this point does not link electrical sensitivity to EMF exposure.
Knowing this, I wouldn’t want to take away from the real benefits of Earthing by claiming it can remedy Electromagnetic sensitivity, when science hasn’t currently verified a 100% connection between the symptoms people experience and EMF exposure.
What is real and measurable are Electromagnetic Frequencies. They definitely exist and they do affect the environment. Even though there is no proven connection between EMFs and health problems, there is a lot of controversy over weather or not the symptoms people experience come from EMFs; Studies have also produced contradictory results.
I personally think it’s wise to take caution, and get as little exposure as possible to EMFs. Many scientific minded people and communities recommend the same.
In regards to Earthing, it does benefit people in a number of proven ways; and people who have been disabled, by what they believe is caused by EMFs, have improved as a result of grounding themselves with some type of Earthing device.

You can sleep on grounding sheets, for example, and ground yourself while sitting around your house, or in front of a computer with an Earthing mat.
In the Earthing book, there are 2 very convincing stories of people who used Earthing technology to recover from severely deteriorated health conditions, and they believe their conditions were attributable to electropollution.

Both of these individuals claim they can work on the computer again without feeling the symptoms they attribute to EMF exposure, as long as they are grounded. Being able to work on the computer again is only a tiny benefit, however, compared to the overall improvement they experienced in their health, as a result of Earthing.
How does Earthing affect the nervous system?
The reason people with symptoms, they attribute to being electrically sensitive, might benefit from Earthing, could have something to do with the way Earthing affects the nervous system.
When a person gets grounded, by getting their bare skin in contact with the earth, or through some kind of grounded Earthing product; certain physiological changes ensue.
In one study referred to as the heart rate variability study, the results show improved heart rate variability, that began immediately after grounding the subjects; HRV improved even more over the entire 40 minutes the subjects were grounded.
The following is a quote from cardiologist, Stephen T. Sinatra. “Clinically, we can determine sympathetic overdrive by measuring heart rate variability (HRV), the beat to beat alterations in heart rate. HRV represents an indicator of nervous system balance on heart function and simultaneously a yardstick of both acute and chronic stress.”
As further indicated by Sinatra, Earthing brings the autonomic nervous system back into balance, which has a calming affect on the nervous system.
This change takes place by assisting our bodies at turning off the flight or fight mode, brought on by an overactive sympathetic nervous system; and brings normal function of the parasympathetic nervous system back, which helps us to be calm.
It’s also been demonstrated that sleeping on conductive Earthing sheets can bring cortisol levels back into normal range. When cortisol is high the stress response ensues, creating a shift to the sympathetic nervous system, making it more difficult to relax.
Normalizing cortisol levels is another way Earthing is able to benefit the autonomic nervous system; returning it to the natural, calm, parasympathetic mode dominance.
